Irrigation System Design work requires the Engineer to be knowledgeable in a broad spectrum of related sciences from agriculture economy and crop water needs to hydraulics and hydrology. The Nelson Engineering approach to problem solving in these fields is twofold:

1) We perform an intense field investigation to determine the on-ground conditions. This generally involves our Surveyors to complete mapping; Geologists, Biologists, and Hydrologists to gather scientific data required; Engineers evaluating structures and measure flows; and occasionally, the use of cultural resources and biological scientists when those resources are involved.

2) We perform extensive background research of existing documents relative to the proposed project as well as interviewing affected parties having an interest in the project, including property owners, irrigators, ditch riders and supervisors.

The information gathered from the aforementioned steps is used to write the “design criteria” (a statement of objectives and controls to be using in design) which are reviewed with the owner prior to design. We have discovered that this process keeps the owner involved and knowledgeable through the decision making process.
